Post-Doctoral Scientist in Hydrology

The Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) was established in 2007 as the first research center of the Cyprus Institute (www.cyi.ac.cy). The Center is rapidly becoming an important research resource for the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa. The EEWRC addresses science, technology, economic and policy issues related to major challenges in the fields of energy, environment, climate and water. The EEWRC is being developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (RPF).

The EEWRC is looking for a Post-Doctoral Fellow with experience and interest in the modelling and spatial analysis of hydrological processes in arid and semi-arid environments. Research activities will include assessments of climate change impacts on water resources. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing FP7 research projects.

Applicants should have received a Ph.D. in hydrology, geography, earth- or environmental sciences within the past 4 years. Key qualifications include proven expertise in hydrological modeling of groundwater or surface water processes, GIS analysis, computer programming in FORTRAN or C, and a sound background in statistical analysis. Experience in satellite image analysis is considered an important asset. An adequate publication record and proficiency in spoken and written English are indispensable. Experience in generating and maintaining contacts in academic circles, as well as in obtaining support for research projects from funding organizations, will be an important advantage.
Appointments will be for a fixed term of initially two years with an option for an extension by one year. The anticipated starting date of the job is October 2010.
