High Performance Computer Applications Support Specialist

The Cyprus Institute (CyI, www.cyi.ac.cy) is a novel, non-profit research and educational institution, with a scientific and technological orientation, with a regional scope. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC, castorc.cyi.ac.cy) of the CyI, in partnership with the University of Illinois and its National Center for Supercomputing Applications, is developing as an important research resource for CyI, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, acting as a gateway between the EU and the region for advancing computational science and technology.

CaSToRC is currently in the process of implementing the infrastructure project Cy-Tera, which includes a multi-Teraflop High Performance Computing (HPC) facility. CaSToRC is also leading the EU-funded LinkSCEEM-2 project which aims to support the development of a HPC eco-system in the Eastern Mediterranean by interlinking and coordinating regional compute, data and visualization resources to form an integrated e-platform. The Center represents Cyprus within the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) initiative and is a partner to the EU funded PRACE-1IP (First Implementation Phase) project.

Position Description
CaSToRC is looking for an applications support specialist with experience in developing scientific applications for HPC systems. The successful candidate will be actively engaged in the implementation of cross-disciplinary scientific applications and the porting and optimization of scientific application software to the CaSToRC HPC systems. S/he will also be involved in maintaining the deployed scientific software applications as well as in training and supporting users in effectively utilizing them.

Profile
The position has the following requirements:
•    MSc in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or Engineering  (PhD preferred)
•    Experience in developing and optimizing parallel applications on UNIX-based systems
•    Experience in programming with Fortran, C, MPI, and parallel methods
•    Proficiency with the use of performance analysis tools, compiler analysis tools, and debuggers
•    Analytical problem solving ability
•    Good  communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills

Additional, preferred skills include:
•    A good understanding of high performance computing architectures.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work within the research division of the CaSToRC. She/he will be primarily engaged in:
•    Developing core, cross-disciplinary scientific applications for the Cy-Tera HPC system
•    Porting and customizing scientific applications for the Cy-Tera HPC system.
•    Implement appropriate APIs enabling the usage and execution of scientific applications within the CaSToRC web-based scientific workflow system.
•    Work with technical counterparts at partner sites to ensure their scientific applications execute efficiently and utilize the HPC system to advance their scientific work.
•    Participate in training and support activities aiming to facilitate the effective utilization of the HPC system and the available scientific applications by users.

Terms and Hiring Process

The appointment will be for 3 years. An extension beyond the three-year period may be considered. The yearly salary range will be commensurate to the experience and qualifications of the candidate.
