Synopsis

The project addresses the critical shortage of human resources with adequate skills in the rapidly developing fields of High Performance Computing (HPC) and Computiational Science and Technology (CS&T). The shortage can at least be partly attributed to the limited awareness among youth in the US and EU of the grand challenges and opportunities provided by HPC and the ever growing impact of simulation of complex systems on modern society. To meet this deficit, there is an urgent need to develop and validate novel policies for enhancing the visibility of existing educational programs in HPC/CS&T. This project aims to stimulate discussion and exchange of experiences between experts from relevant US and EU educational/research institutions (including their students) to cope with this problem. Through this transatlantic effort, the partners will develop joint educational policies and proceed to the design and development of a suitable web-enabled platform to expose High Performance Computing opportunities (HiPoP). HiPoP shall provide easy access to information on educational and research issues in HPC/CS&T, with particular appeal to students. The actual implementation of HiPoP will be carried out by the Cyprus Institute with the support of partners from the University of Illinois and Pennsylvania State University. All partners, including students, will be involved in the evaluation of the developed policies and the assessment of the implemented cyber-platform.
